ROV Tooling

Historically subsea inspection has been by diver-deployed automated tools. This can result in potential risk to life as well as a maximum depth restriction and very costly inspection campaigns.

ROV-deployed tools overcome these limitations and represent a cost-effective solution. Sonomatic has developed a range of ROV-deployed tools for automated ultrasonic inspection. The ROV-deployed tools have been designed for inspecting pipelines, risers, caissons, and structural assets. The tools are adaptable and can operate both horizontally and vertically. A range of inspection techniques can be deployed, including corrosion mapping and Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD).

Our ROV-iT Inspection tools have the capability of inspection in the diameter range of 6”-30” (3 separate tools for the various diameters). The tools are of a rigid framed design housing all the inspection components within this frame for protection. It offers a 1m inspection location (360˚) at one time without the need for ROV intervention to re-locate the tool to the next location. Operated extensively down to 500m water depth, recently deployed at 1435m and tested to 2000m.

The ROV-iT is capable of inspecting for a range of degradation mechanisms including corrosion, erosion and cracking by use of inspection techniques such as Corrosion Mapping, TOFD Weld Inspection, Automated Pulse Echo inspections, Ovality and Dent Mapping.

All scanners have hot stab connections to supply comms and hydraulics to the tool via the ROV, and the tool is compatible with most modern work class ROV’s. Use of the hotstabs facilitate the option of deploying two different size tools subsea in a basket at once, and minimises vessel time for the ROV returning to the surface to change configuration.

The MAG-Rover steerable crawler which can be deployed on horizontal pipe and vertical caissons from 16” diameter to flat surface. (trials ongoing to accommodate a 10” pipe).

This tool utilises the same Control Pod as the ROV-iT to eliminate interface concerns, and has been utilised with most modern work class ROV’s and trials have been conducted with an inspection class ROV. With buoyancy it is near neutrally buoyant in water, making it manageable by a smaller ROV giving increased access to awkward and difficult locations. Extensive use in Caisson inspections where diver operation is considered dangerous, i.e. evidence of through wall defects causing concern on the integrity of an asset, or in shallower water near the splash zone.
