Inspection for wet H2S damage in sour service

Brochures/data sheets

Capability Statement-Fitness for Service Assessments

Equipment exposed to H2S in service can suffer a number of degradation mechanisms, including Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) and vertical cracking. These mechanisms can occur in parent pipe or plate but welds can also be affected in H2S service, with the potential for Stress Oriented Hydrogen Induced Cracking (SOHIC).

Wet H2S mechanisms can be a significant threat to integrity, with potential for catastrophic failure in the form of rupture. Reliable information on such mechanisms is therefore critical to effective integrity management of equipment in H2S service. Sonomatic provides a comprehensive service for inspection and assessment of wet H2S damage. This includes inspections aimed at:

  • Determining whether any wet H2S mechanisms are active (or confirming absence of such mechanisms).
  • Characterisation of indications, e.g. discrimination between inclusions in the as manufactured state and lamellar cracking associated with HIC.
  • Sizing of damage, e.g. location and extent of HIC and sizing of vertical cracking elements.
  • Determination of changes over time, e.g. growth in extent of HIC, density of HIC damage.

Reliability of the above information is fundamental to sound integrity and operational decisions. Sonomatic provides a range of inspection techniques as part of the service for wet H2S damage.

Services are provided using scanners developed in-house to optimise technique performance in the field and to allow rapid deployment under typical field conditions.

Sonomatic also assists clients with planning of inspections and integrity assessments as follows.
