Non-destructive testing expert, Sonomatic, has pledged and donated £1000 to The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and Alzheimer Scotland, after completing a seven month project free of Lost Time Incidents (LTI). The pledge was also made by Shell and GPS (Wood Group and Cape), after the three companies worked together to perform Clamped Support Inspection on the flare line at the Mossmorran NGL Gas Plant in Fife.

The businesses involved in the venture described it as ‘pioneering’, given its use of brand new ultrasonic inspection technology. This technology, the Clamped Support Inspection Scanner (CSI), deploying Multiskip and CHIME® inspection was developed by Sonomatic, in conjunction with Shell, on another project which was concluded in 2010. The Mossmorran flare line assignment is the first to use the CSI Scanner with alternative access methods.

For Sonomatic, the initiative signifies a particularly important achievement. In addition to the team from Shell, who were instrumental in driving the project from the beginning, GPS (Gas Plant Services) were brought in to provide rope and alternative access. Seventy percent of the CSI Tool deployment, carried out at Mossmorran, was completed using rope access. This significantly reduced costs and overall risk, as scaffolding was not required for the majority of the workscope, however, the risk for each inspection deployment was increased. As a result, daily risk assessments and toolbox talks were carried out to ensure safety remained at the top of the agenda for all involved.

The charities chosen to receive the money were decided by those working on the assignment.
Sonomatic’s on site team, Graham Marshall, Iain Collin and Colin Black were pleased to be given the task of nominating worthwhile charities to benefit from the donation. Graham said, “The motivation driving everyone on the team was that safety was the number one priority. We were pleased to nominate our chosen charities for a much appreciated donation.”

The team chose to donate the money to The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and Alzheimer Scotland, as they tackle two of the biggest diseases affecting Scotland today. General Manager, John Lilley said, “The hard work of the personnel involved was the key factor in completing this large scale project without incident. Their commitment to safe working practice was impeccable. Therefore, it was decided that they should be asked to choose the charities to support. We’re delighted with their choices.”

Shell and GPS are donating equal amounts to Cystic Fibrosis: Yorkhill Hospital Glasgow, the Marie Curie Hospice in Glasgow, Rachel House Children’s Hospice at Kinross, and Ninewells Children’s Hospital in Dundee.

After the success of the Mossmorran project, Sonomatic now aim to complete their next venture, and all future work as safely. The specialists’ in inspection technology are about to undertake several new projects using their latest innovation, the MAG Rover.
