A new flagship Aberdeen base and four new UK members of staff are in the pipeline for global inspections technology group Sonomatic.

The company – a world leader in ultrasonic non-destructive testing – is confident of riding out the recession, and even turning it to advantage.

General manager John Lilley said: “When operators are looking for ways to cut costs, they tend to focus on reducing capital investment projects and because new plant is not coming on line, the focus inevitably switches to making what they already have run harder and last longer. And that’s where we come in, advising them on how to achieve this.”

Although Sonomatic’s techniques are more costly to apply upfront than conventional testing, this is outweighed by the long-term benefits. “Operators find they can extend the life of their plant, and they can run for longer periods between inspections because they have better data and higher confidence,” said Mr Lilley.

To meet demand, Sonomatic is recruiting four new technical staff in the short-term, two of whom will be based in Aberdeen and two in Warrington. There are plans to boost staff numbers further in the future.

The company is meanwhile now fitting out new office and workshop premises within the Energy Development Centre located on the Aberdeen Science and Energy Park, which is owned and operated by Scottish Enterprise The state of the art centre aims to boost research and innovation in Scotland’s energy centre and provides high-quality workshop and laboratory space for growth companies in the energy sector.. David Littlejohn – Director of Industries and Infrastructure said “As a long standing occupier of business premises on the Energy Park, Scottish Enterprise welcomes Sonomatic’s decision to expand its operations at the Park in our new state of the art R & D facility.”

“The move signifies that Sonomatic will now be in a position to offer an even better service to clients, as more North Sea projects will now be mobilised directly from Aberdeen, rather than from our Warrington base, “said Mr Lilley.
